Senate File 2379 - Gun Law and PK-12 Schools Posted: Thursday, January 13th, 2011
Our state has recently enacted a new gun law that allows for a non-professional permit to carry a gun that has no restrictions on whether the gun is concealed or not. There are still restricted areas, and schools qualify as one of those restricted areas.
Iowa Code Section 724.4B prohibits firearms on the grounds of schools even when the person has a non-professional permit to carry. In fact, the new law makes it even clearer than before that carrying a gun on school grounds is prohibited.
There are several exceptions to having the restrictions related to firearms on school grounds. These include:
Law enforcement officers when required to carry
Military personnel when carrying the firearm is part of their current duty
A person specifically authorized by the school to do so, including for the purpose of conducting an instructional program on firearm safety
